This commission was my first ever family portrait. So I’d like to dedicate it to my family… The family thats here, the family that’s gone, and the family that’s yet to come… thanks for clearing the path and never letting me forget where I came from. Thank you for being so strong, for showing me the way, and helping me along…
To the family that share my blood, and the family that share my soul, thank you for loving me for me and making me whole.
“there is nothing about a catapillar that tells you it’s going to be a butterfly” – Buckminster Fuller
Metamorphosis is one of nature’s most dramatic transformations. A destructive being that only rests and cosumes, the catapillar… transforms into a being that poses and creates so much beauty, as it flies from flower to flower…The butterfly.
“we can assume a catapillar has no premonition of the future, so when it enters that cocoon, it must believe it has come to its end.”-Alan Watts
The butterfly for me symbolises the transformation of life, re-birth, and the interconnected nature of everything in existence.
The four Classical elements typically refer to the concepts, rejected by modern science, in ancient Greece of earth, water, air, fire, which were proposed to explain the nature and complexity of all matter in terms of simpler substances, they later added a fifth element ether, which was though to be the substance that holds all other substances. Other Ancient cultures in Babylonia, Japan, Tibet, and India had similar lists, sometimes referring in local languages to “air” as “wind” and the fifth element as “void”, the term void has also been interpreted as “self” or “spirit”.
In our modern understanding of the world we live in,there are a lot more than four elements. However with respect to biological life there are four elements that are more common. i.e. Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen and Nitrogen. In this piece I tried to combine the modern observations, with the ancient intuition of what matter is.
“spiritualism is understanding the universe so you can make it a better place to live in” – Fela Kuti
hazel eyes-bloodshot, but only looking only for light… Trying to fight the good fight…
despite all the bad he knew he would find… In himself. with nowhere to turn to for help… He pulled at his greasy hair in frustration…but there was only ever love on his mind… And Smoke on his breath, though he only spoke truth… As his mind scanned for clues… Broken pieces of an identity…trauma from a troubled youth… He knew, he was nothing more than an entity, his environment produced… Forever lost in his own thoughts… As they produced his environment too… He saw past the packaging, blessed with a deeper understanding… But couldnt find his own bar code, forever staring into space… Scanning
This piece was created for client that is truly imported by the unknown and wanted a piece of art that would be thought provoking and invoke a sense of wonder wherever they looked at it.
Standing in your own radiant glow, you can only see the shadows you’ve cast.
Stuck between a bright future and a dark past… Wondering which one is really you…wondering if all you do has had a purpose? Wondering if its all been worth, it or just worthless… But a building will never know the strength of its own concrete, and a fire will never feel warm from its own heat. Just like you, could never see your light from your own point of view.
So I urge you to keep shining… And shine bright… Whatever that is to you…even though you’re blind to your own sight.. Because Its cold, and its dark. And we all need your light.
A horse, a camel and a donkey decided to have a race.
The horse had its agility, it was running from the moment it was born. So it could go faster than most. Gallantly spritnting and jumping over hurdles
The camel had its endurance, born with thick skin and humps to store fat, it can go further than most without discomfort.
The donkey had niether of these, No where near as durable as the camel or as agile as the horse… It seemed the donkey was a dreamer to think it could win this race… But it looked niether at the elegant horse nor the towering camel, and kept its vision fixed on the course ahead.
The race started with a loud bang!
The horse got startled and would not move forward, it began to kick and neigh instead.
The camel got spooked and ran away in the opposite direction.
While the donkey, the smallest of them all, remained still, held to its vision and proceeded to win the race undeterred, unbothered, and unafraid.
It’s always a pleasure making art for fellow artists. This was commissioned by a friend of the very talented MC Angel. I used symbolic representation of her values and her own lyrics to make this portrait.
